What is the first step to training collection?

Hey Dressage Superstars! Today’s question is, “What is the first step to training collection?”

The last thing we’re going to do is to teach the horse how to take the weight from the front to the hind. So you get that the horse likes to be on the forehand and have all its weight on its shoulders, and the goal for a dressage horse is to take all of that and to sit on its hind legs.

The whole point of a dressage horse is that they’re moving from effortless aides, that they’re really forward thinking and they’re willing to do whatever it is that you want, but they’re also listening to your seat, and coming back with their energy and their weight when you ask them to.

Natasha: Hey riding superstars, and welcome to Train with Tash TV. Today I’m going to answer the question, how do you train collection, what’s the first step? So the last thing we’re going to do is to teach the horse how to take the weight from the front to the hind. So you get that the horse likes to be on the forehand and have all its weight on its shoulders, and the goal for a dressage horse is to take all of that and to sit on its hind legs.

Student: Yeah.

Natasha: Yeah. So we want it to start to take that weight, and the first exercise we do is just tempo changes in trot. So what I want you to do is stop trotting, rising trot, full arena.

Student: Oh, full arena.

Natasha: Yeah. That’s right. Oh no, you can do a circle, that’s all right. Okay. Yeah. So when you’re ready to start trotting. Good. Get him a little bit rounder. A little bit more forward. Where’s your corner, Eden? Corner. Why’s his head to the outside? His head has to be in the middle of the chest. That’s right. Forward, round. Good, good. And now what I want to do is slow your rise and slow down the trot. Good. Slow. Yeah. And now go. Go. Yeah. And now slow down your rise. Think, I want to walk. Slow. Slow. You’re rising too fast. Slow it. Yes. And now go. That’s better. And now think walk. I’m going to slow my rise to walk. Yes. And go. Keep the roundness. Keep the nose into the chest. And collect. Slow. Slower, slower. Rounder. Where’s his head? There. Good. And go. Go. And collect. Slow. Good. Good. And walk. Any questions about that?

Student: No.

Natasha: Okay. So did you find that easy or hard? Just change to the random walk. Keep him walking. If he’s doing a test, then he’s got to go to the toilet. Good.

Student: I found that a bit difficult.

Natasha: You found it difficult?

Student: Yeah.

Natasha: Yeah. What did you find difficult?

Student: Slowing my rising down.

Natasha: Yeah. So it’s the same kind of muscles, well, it’s not the inner thighs. I just want you to think of, if I was about to punch you in the stomach with a big baseball bat, all those stomach muscles would tighten so it wouldn’t hurt as much.

Student: Yeah.

Natasha: That’s what I want you to do when you rise. Just go ah, and tighten everything. And then when you want to drop back down, just don’t. Just slow yourself to come down.

Student: Yeah.

Natasha: Okay, go again. Yeah. So big trot. Keep his nose into the chest. It’s got to be round, soft. Yeah. And now half halt. Slow it down. Slow rise. Yes. Now go. Good. And the minute you feel him react to your rise and slow down is the minute you go back out. So go out. Yeah. And now slow. Slow. Yeah, now go. Bigger. Yeah. And now slow. Slower. Rock it back. And now go. Yeah. And now rock it back. Good. And now go. Go. Yeah. And now, rock it back. Yes, good. And walk. And it’s actually a good… Yeah, just walk and circle round me. This is something that you want to do with lazy horses as well, because when you go, he doesn’t go, does he? Much.

Student: Yeah.

Natasha: Yeah. So, if you ask with a light leg and he doesn’t respond, you need to come with the whip and say, hey, hey, hey, when I apply a light leg, you go forward. When I apply light feet aides, you come back.

Student: Yeah.

Natasha: So that’s the whole point of a dressage horse.
