Is Heels Down Good Advice For Riders?

Hey Superstar, we are about to discuss if heels down is good advice for riders to listen to!

You need to remember that there needs to be a really nice straight line from your heel to your hip to your shoulder to your ear. If you only think about heels down – what happens? You have to come out of the saddle to get more weight down through the heel! I want you to think rather than heels down, weight down through the ankles.

The ankle is your shock absorber and takes the movement of the horse down through the ankles.

Hey Dressage Superstars, today I’m going to answer the question “Is heels down good advice for riders?”

We have our heel, we have our leg – so the first thing you need to remember is that it needs to go heel, hip, shoulder, ear. There should be a nice, beautiful line. Cameraman can you do have nice, beautiful line to show how it should look. So you’re nice and straight and centered. So you can say my heel is naturally down. Now if you only think about heels down and go, oh, I’m going to push them down, we’re going to push them down.

For me to push my heels down, what had to happen?

I had to come out of the saddle to try and get more weight down through the heel, so don’t think heels down in an effort to itself. I just want you to think rather weight down through the ankles.

So if you’re gripping with your knees and gripping to the wrong part of your body, you’re not going to have any weight in your stirrup and hands up who loses their stirrup? Normally a lot of riders when they’re learning to ride! That’s because they’re gripping here – with their knees and thighs. So the stirrup is just moving around all over the place because the bottom part of your leg is flapping around. You have to let go of everything up at your knee and your thigh to get the weight down through the ankle, which will mean naturally the heel will fall.

But just by focusing on the heel, you might grip with the wrong thing. So instead I want you to remember weight down through the ankle, weight down through the ankle, and even stamp down.

So when you’re trotting, you can see my ankle. One, two, one, two, one, two, one, one, one, one it does a little stamp. So I don’t start bouncing in the saddle. The ankle is my shock absorber to take the movement of the horse down through the ankles. My ankle is very heavy, I’ve got nice weight down there, which means that it bounces up and down, which means I don’t bounce up and down. So trust that helps! Enjoy!
