How Do I Become a Brave Rider?

Hey Riding Superstars! Today we have one of our most popular FearLESS Friday TV Throwback! How Do I Become a Brave Rider?

Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway. And I really believe that’s bravery. Bravery is not an absence of fear. Bravery is doing something in spite of fear.

So normally don’t know if you notice that thing about life, but anything you really, really, really, really, really want it comes at a price.

I’d love to hear from you how you go and what strategies you use to get your horse to improve your confidence when you ride.

Offer as much details as possible in your reply – your story might just help someone else have a breakthrough in their riding journey!

Important: Links to other posts, videos etc. will be removed.

Thank so so much for reading, watching and sharing your story!

Hey FearLESS Superstars. Today we’re going to answer the question, “How do you become, or be, a brave rider?”

Okay, so before I answer that question I have to define, what is bravery?

So, I think Wayne someone defines it best, where, oh no, I think that’s courage. Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway. And I really believe that’s bravery. Bravery is not an absence of fear. Bravery is doing something in spite of fear.

So, how do you be brave in your riding? It’s how do you do what you need to do, like drop your reins, go for a canter, ride a young horse, take a horse to a comp? Do what at canter, get on, walk, trot, whatever your fear is for you. How do you do that? Not with no fear, because that only turns up after. So how do you do it in spite of the fear?

And it really depends how strong and how much fear that you have and how used you are… this is a learned response… how used you are to doing things when you’re scared. So, I was having a talk to my four year old daughter and I was telling her, she was like, “Oh, I’m not doing that. I’m scared.”

And I was like, “No, honey, that means that’s what we do.”

So I’m trying to teach her, even from the young age of four, that you do things you’re scared of. I told her, “Mommy and Daddy do things they’re scared of every single day. And that’s like a rule. If you’re scared, you have to do it.”

It is your inner heart, your inner soul, your inner part of you saying, “I really want this, but of course there’s going to be a price for it.”

So normally don’t know if you notice that thing about life, but anything you really, really, really, really, really want it comes at a price.

You don’t just get it. You’re not a six year old now, when you wanted a pink bike for Christmas and you got a pink bike for Christmas, good for you. In real life, if you want a pink bike for Christmas, and if that’s what you dearly want, if that’s what you desperately want, if that’s the only thing that matters to you, I guarantee you there’s a lot of sacrifice and a lot of hardship coming. And that’s our job. That’s our job as humans to face that fear, to face that hardness, to keep going in spite of all of that to get what we really want.

So if you really want to trot, you really want to canter, you really want to ride, you really want to compete, you can do that and you will be brave doing that one day. But there’s this whole process in the middle of that, that is your personal journey that you need to go on.
